The Holy Land Pilgrimage Route
Thousands of pilgrims and tourists walked or rode the pilgrimage route of the Holy Land in the second half of the 19th century. Jerusalem was the highlight of this adventure that started in Jaffa and branched out to Bethlehem, the River Jordan, Nazareth, and the historic ruins around the Sea of Galilee. Inspired by the Holy Scriptures but disillusioned by the harsh reality in the Land of the Bible, many left their impressions in travel books, photos, letters, and picture postcards.
By systematically collecting and researching these documents it is possible
to reconstruct the vanished landscapes, sites, and people of the Holy Land
of that era.
Pilgrimage Routes
marked on the holy land map
The map originated in an 1894 picture and travel album and reflects the sites visited or known to the authors. The pilgrimage route was added by me on top, to mark the most popular roads used by the pilgrims and tourists.
